By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Describe the environmental impacts of the smartphone life cycle. Students examine how a full life‑cycle assessment covers raw material extraction, production, distribution, use and end‑of‑life treatment and understand that manufacturing generates about 50 kg of CO₂‑equivalent per device.
- Interpret global e‑waste statistics and explain the need for circular economy models. Using recent UN data (62 million tonnes of e‑waste produced in 2022 with less than 22 % properly recycled and only 5 million tonnes from small IT and telecom equipment), students contrast the linear take‑make‑waste model with circular approaches.
- Evaluate personal smartphone use and propose actions to reduce environmental impact. Students recognise that production processes account for over 80 % of the global warming potential of a phone and that extending device lifetimes and ensuring proper recycling are among the best ways to lower impact.
- Develop digital and collaborative skills. Students navigate an interactive global e‑waste map to compare per‑capita e‑waste generation and formal collection and collaborate on designing a school‑based circular‑economy initiative.
